Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Material that is not available in the Bay College Library may be interloaned from other libraries (ILL).

  • ILL is provided free of charge for Bay College faculty/students/staff.
  • Requests are usually for instructional purposes.
  • Non-instructional materials may be interloaned but may be subject to a fee.
  • Some lenders may not loan free and you can set the maximum you are willing to pay (between $5 - $15).
  • Make sure your requested citations are complete and accurate.
  • Requests may be made via WorldCat/Library website, email, request form, phone or in person.
  • Average time to receive requested material is 7-14 days - so plan accordingly.
  • Requestors be notified via email or phone when item arrives.
  • Items may be picked up at Circulation Desk, sent via email as attachment (articles), or via campus mail.
  • Loan periods vary (set by lending libraries).

Reserve Room

What are reserve readings/materials?

  • Reserve Room (Course Reserves) items are materials designated for specific classes at the instructor's request.
  • Books, journal articles, study guides, past exams, DVDs/videos and biology specimens are among the items that can be placed on reserve.
  • Guarantees that all students in the class will have access to the material.
  • Material may be owned by the library or the instructor.
  • In addition to the Reserve Room - ask the Library Staff about Research Guides and how development of research guides can be used in your courses.

Where are the reserved readings/materials?

  • Circulation desk.
  • Use may be restricted to the library for a period of hours (2, 3 or 4).
  • Many items can be checked out overnight (24 hours), for three days, seven days & 21 days.
  • Instructor and Library Staff collaborate on most appropriate lending period for assignment. 

How will students know if your course has readings/material on reserve?

  • Noted in class syllabus.
  • Discussed in class.
  • Students can use online Course Reserves to determine whether there are any items on reserve for your class. May search by Instructor name or by Course (example: anthropology).

How do students borrow something from the Reserve Room?

  • Students come to Circulation Desk with Bay College I.D. card.
  • Ask for a specific item/title, instructor name, course number or course name.
  • Library Staff will assist students identify what items are on reserve. It is very helpful if student brings their syllabus.
  • Items may photocopied or checked out depending on loan period set by instructor.
  • Items checked out do have fines if item is not returned by due date (10¢ per hour/$1 per day)

How can I place materials on reserve for my courses?

  • Instructors may place personal or library owned items on reserve for a week, month, semester or academic school year.

How can I reserve equipment/media to use in class?

  • Equipment is permanently placed in classrooms and meets most needs.
  • Contact John Anderson/AV Technician (ext. 4222) for additional AV equipment requests (example: portable DVD player).
  • Library staff can deliver materials to your office (for security) when it is not convenient for you to come to the library during open hours.
  • Library Staff can also checkout material to you for an extended period of time for your convenience.

Log on to your Library Account to:

  • Renew library material
  • Place hold on material that is checked out
  • Review your account (review items checked out and due dates)

Library Instruction

Why library and information access instruction?

  • Assist students in writing more thought out papers.
  • Teach students how to investigate/research topics.
  • Show student how to locate and use a wide range of information sources.
  • Students how to select, use and evaluate resources.
  • In a course related library instruction session, Library Staff focus on specific research tools or subject areas geared to your course needs and class assignments.
  • Students learn about the validity and realiability of library purchased resources.
  • Instruction in information skills provides students a framework for lifelong learning.

How do I arrange library instruction?

  • Contact Oscar DeLong (ext. 4076) or Ann Bissell (ext. 4079).
  • Instruction session may meet during regular-scheduled class time.
  • Meet in classroom, LRC Computer Classroom (818) or Student Computing Center
  • 5 days advance notice is requested in order to schedule the appropriate room(s) and prepare for instruction.

Holding Materials

Items that are charged out to other users can be placed on hold.

Renewing Materials

  • Books can be renewed twice- Log in to your myLibrary Account
  • Periodicals, DVDs and videos only renewable in special circumstances- Contact library staff

  • Free under 20 pages a day.

If a student has overdue items or accumulated fines on returned materials amounting to $10 or more, a HOLD will be placed on the student record which complicates registration, transcripts and grades. If materials are lost, the borrower must pay the replacement cost of the items. No additional items may be checkout during this time frame.
