The Surgical Technology Program is an Associate in Applied Science degree program. This is a competitive entry program, students must apply to Allied Health's Surgical Technology program by selecting Apply Online to the left of the screen. The curriculum includes selected science courses, which provide the basis for in-depth consideration of both theory and clinical application of principles utilized in Surgical Technology.  Basic courses in the theoretical aspects of Surgical Technology encompass lecture, clinical, and online instruction.

Throughout the program, students are provided with hands-on experience in cooperation with various hospitals, under the direction of the Program Director (Academic Team Leader), program faculty, teaching clinicians, and clinical preceptors.  Graduates of the Program are eligible to sit for the National Board Certification Examination administered by Applied Measurement Professionals (AMP) and endorsed by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); this examination has been incorporated into the program at the student’s expense and is non-refundable, as are all other components of the “Gold Package”. Likewise, once purchased, the expense for the lab kit is non-refundable.  The National Board Exam will be administered on-campus, at a set time and date (which all eligible students must participate), proctored by an approved individual by AMP, and given within 30 days post-graduation.

The Surgical Technologist degree is offered through a partnership between Bay College and the Michigan Workforce Training and Education Collaborative(MWTEC).  Educational Programs in the Collaboration (EPiC) in the consortium for the purpose of sharing instructional resources to offer healthcare programs. We have up to 32 seats to award.  The program requires a minimum of 8 students to run annually. This MWTEC EPIC Surgical Technologist program has different tuition rate and fee than Bay College standards.   We follow the Westshore/Muskegon Community College apprenticeship program.

Students are required to be employed at a partnering institution of OSF Hospital or Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital. If you have a hospital in Upper Peninsula willing to host you in their ER and OR, we will need to coordinate with MiWorks to set up the Apprenticeship.  An Apprenticeship can take a few months to set up.

NOTE: Students with a CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certificate may be awarded ten credit hours toward the degree, and would satisfy the requirements of ALH 104, SURG 101, 102, and 103.

All classes must be passed with a “C” or better in the program sequence or anything red taken ahead of time. If a class was taken ahead of time it will be used in the calculated GPA for admissions.

Admissions GPA must be a 2.0 or higher, and based on any Pre-requisite or College level class complete ahead of time.  Higher the GPA the better chance students have of entering the program.
